We are accustomed to seeing ancient statuary and stonework that is void of color beyond the natural color of the stone itself. Yet the ancients did make much use of the colors they had, limited though the pallet may have been. But the stone has often outlived the paints and stains that were available.
In the gates above the color was baked into the bricks and we can see how much the color was valued.
While I can't say much for the quality of this artwork these smaller pieces interested me because at least a hint of the original color lingers on. It's fun to imagine what they looked like when they were first made.
