The Love River in Kaohsiung

Here is a web photo album for an Urban Ruin

Boy I cheated this time but it's the only way I am gonna get through this and it's works pretty well I think. I should probably do this more.

There is this old house that was taken over by ficus trees. Kind of an odd ball tourist attraction, yet it was kinda cool.

23 Oct 2012 The Dome of Light art installation at the
Meilidao Subway Station in Kaohsiung (gaow shung)

24 Oct 2012 At a small park outside Kaohsiung We got to see this thing called a "Mud Volcano", One of only a few in the world.

24 Oct 2012 And we also went to see the "Mad" Pond.

Okay, it's a typo. But a somewhat appropriate one. To appreciate this you should watch the video of the "Mad" pond and the Mud Volcano though it's a little hard to see the most interesting feature of the "Mad" pond in the bright sunlight.

Here is:

24 Oct 2012 Now I am going to take a total shortcut. I can't believe it's been six months since I got back and I am still have so much Taiwan material to go through. So for most of Southern Taiwan I am going to take a shortcut and just rely on Slide Shows. Much faster and easier to prepare.

So the first one is of the largest Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan. The Fo Guang Shan Monastery outside of Kaohsiung. It's a huge complex, a bit Disneyesque. There were animatronic statues depicting the life of the Buddha and we watched a 4-D animated movie of his life (in Chinese but I sort of knew the story). I took to calling the place Buddha-Rama. Well, I don't mean to be irreverent. Just because you are on the path it doesn't mean you have to lose your sense of humor. And the place really is very lovely and photogenic. If you liked the earlier "Temples of Taiwan" slideshow them click on the link below the picture.

Here are many more photos in higher resolution. Don't forget, it's a great time to use the Slidesjow feature.

23 Oct 2012 The next place is Liuqiu Island. A very nice coral island with many coral caves and other structures. We got there by a ferry boat ride from Pingtung Dongliu Harbor. We walked the island although we did run a bit short on time so a scooter rental would be in order for most folks. Technically you need an international drivers license to rent a scooter in Taiwan but as that old Miami Beach Motto goes, "The rules are different here" and I'm sure a scooter rental would be no problem on this island.

25 Oct 2012 The large Ciaotou Sugar Refinery in the norther end of Kaohsiung shut down years ago. They run tours but sadly the day I was there no tour was running and the place was buttoned up tight. I had to content myself with wandering the grounds and looking in windows. A bit disappointing but still worthwhile. If you don't care for the UrbEx stuff this is one you may want to skip. But if you find it intriguing click below the sample photo.
