14 Dec 2011     Here Gipsi and I pose next to a self portrait of Uncle Fritz.

Gipsi found Jodie Wilson the local history librarian at the Crawfordsville library. Fritz did a few still life subjects as well as portraits and this is one behind us.

Okay I guess there must be exceptions, but what I have found on this trip is that if you connected with someone as a friend years ago then chances are you will connect again even after 10, 20 even 35 years in this case. Time and time again I would meet someone and within seconds it was as if the years had never passed.

19 Dec 2011     So what will it be like seeing this guy after over 35 years, both of us now adults?

The space over the bars used to have a sign saying CRAIGSLIST.ORG

So now it is time to say goodbye to Indiana and Kentucky. Christmas is getting near and I want to make it to my brothers place before it gets too far into the holiday rush. My flight has a layover in Las Vegas. It has been a long time since I passed through there, I had forgotten about the slot machines in the Airport terminals.

Now they also have these gaudy Oxygen Bars in the airport terminals. I think it is supposed to help you get over a hangover among other things.  I was actually feeling a bit lousy after the first leg of the flight and I was tempted to try it for the 15 bucks, but didn't take the plunge. Maybe I should have, just to see.

I did a Photo Essay for my High School Photography class. The subject I choose was "Pedestrian Polo" a mythical game in which one scores points by running over pedestrians. Cliff was my primary model and victim.

Act dead Cliff!

Now Fast Forward
Here she is during my visit in Dec 2011. She claims she has aged but honestly I can't see it.

As we were riding in the car I explained my situation. "Well you are just a Free Range Chicken" she said. "Yeah, I guess I am" I said. That became a kind of running joke with us.

And she also tried out Mark Spitz's starting platform under his watchful eye and later helped me test my underwater camera at Hall of Fame pool in Lauderdale.

I have to say my timing was pretty good here. I got to sit down with the family to this incredible Christmas dinner a few days before Christmas because Gipsi's parents Haydee and Segundo were off to vacation in Florida the next day.

14 Dec 2011      During my visit I had another sort of "Family Mission" to attend to.  My fathers family also had a branch in Crawfordsville, Indiana, not so far from Bloomington. There was a Great Uncle (My Father's Mother's Brother) who was a prominent artist in that area and taught at Wabash College.

This is another relative I never knew
(he died in 1947) though we do have a portrait he painted of my Father. His name was Fritz Schlemmer. Here are a few links about him

Fritz Schlemmer was an Artist for Town, College

I contacted the archivist at Wabash College who is author of that second piece and she agreed to show me some of his work that is still on display on campus. Gipsi volunteered to drive on the day trip and it was so great to have her come along.

With three more in Beth's collection at Wabash

One final road trip before leaving Bloomington. Once again Gipsi and Utpal helped out by lending me a car for a day trip to Louisville.

There I was to meet Clifford. Of all the old friends I have reconnected with Clifford holds the record for being the longest out of touch. I have not seen him since about 1974.

Some pictures from way back in the day

We were big into Halloween in those days. Naturally we are in masks and you can't tell who is who but I recall Cliff is the one in the red and black above. To the right, that's his Mom we are strangling.

Clifford splits his time between a few places. Here is the cool apartment he has set up in his Mom's basement for when he is in Louisville. You can really see the artist eye at work.

His studio is called Red Dog Art Studio

You can see some of his work on Facebook if you  Log on and click here

I seem to be spending a lot of time in Graveyards on this trip. Driving around we stopped to see his Father's crypt at Louisvilles Cave Hill Cemetery and stopped to look at the cave where it gets it's name.

Hmmm could we do some sorta Halloween thing here?

That's all for now. I may take a little break from Dean's list for a bit but I plan to resume once I get some more material.

I am thinking of doing a kind of "Prequel", going back and telling more about the preparations for this trip. Let me know what you think of that idea.

Don't worry I won't forget you, you are on my list.

By now my friend Gipsi is back from India where she went with her husband Utpal to visit his parents.

Gipsi is yet another old friend whom I have not seen in umpteen years, since she and her sister Maria used to visit us in Florida. Here are pictures of her from way back in the day when she, like Maria, and just about everyone, got the Scuba diving treatment.

11-20 Dec 2011

20 Dec 2011      So now I have arrived in San Francisco. My brother is not into holidays at all; there was really no Christmas celebration except I called some people. Mostly I have been catching up on with the pictures and for the ten years since I last saw my brother in person. I have done almost no tourism so far.

I did take one photo of Carl standing in front of the original Craigslist location. They started in San Francisco and have since moved for a fancier building but the original location is very near where Carl lives, 1381 9th Avenue
.  Here he is standing in front.

Hey Chuck and Karen, This is where it all started ! ! !
