During our bike ride Cliff and I paid a visit to the old house. For those of you who don't know this is the house I lived in all during Junior High and High School. Friends I had in those years and after have many a great memory based in this place.
It was sold in 2004. At the time I was pretty reluctant but bowed to pressure from my brother. In hindsight it was the right thing to do. The guy who bought it signed three mortgages at the closing. It's currently (I believe) owned by a bank or banks but I'm sure they have no idea what to do with this unique property, especially in the state it's in. Due to the low elevation of the lot the purchaser had lifted the house off it's foundation, planning to increase the elevation and reducing the chance of flooding. A huge project to be sure but needed. (One reason it was good to sell). Anyway with the house cut in half and sitting atop metal beams the housing crisis gave this work in progress to the bank. If you are wondering "why not just tear it down?"; good thought but it was built in 1939 and Ft. Lauderdale has restrictions on the destruction of historic buildings, defined as anything built prior to WW II.
Below the house as we saw it from the South bank of New River.
