The Final Posting

Two Last Hikes
and a few more photo albums and videos

I am at a bit of a loss here. Since Stixy announced that they were shutting down the uploading of new photos has been disabled. I had already prepared the previous pages but sorry, NO PHOTOS on this page . . .

But don't bail out. There will be links to slideshows and yet a few more video clips including ones I was saving for last because they were so special.

So

Goodbye Stixy
and Thanks for all the Bits

Just for reference I have placed a copy of the official Stixy announcement below.

hey hey, I did correct a couple of typos.

To our loyal Stixy users

We have decided to pull the plug and shut down the service as of September 30, 2013. Thank you all for your support of Stixy!

When we launched Stixy in August 2007 we set out with the ambition to be the best online collaboration tool available. As a User Experience Design firm relying on paying client projects our response to feature requests and new technology has not been as rapid as we would have liked. Still people genuinely seemed to really like the Stixy concept. Our user base is growing and the number of visitors is increasing each year.

To live up to expectations from new user on smartphones and tablets Stixy needs a major redesign. In our current situation we do not have the resources to take Stixy to the next level and have decided to shut down the service as of September 30, 2013.

If you have information you want to save please go to your Stixyboards, download images and copy/paste text to your local hard drive. Your information will be available until September 30, 2013.

We really appreciate your loyalty and your excitement about Stixy and we sincerely thank you for your participation in this incredible journey.

UPDATE: As you probably know Sitxy DID go dark and I subsequently switched to Weebly.com, though I was sometimes years behind creating the postings. To help this situation I have tried using Google Photos which allows me to insert text between the photos in a painfully limited way (Small text font and no formatting). But it's quicker.

And I am now migrating to Google sites with which I can use my domain name (big-back-yard.net). But I will probably keep many of the old pages on weebly for as long as they let me do it for free. It would be an awful chore to move them.

And here is another trip to a very steep rock whose name means "Dutiful Son"

Life After Stixy

I guess it's pretty obvious that the presentation here really loses something without photos.

As I mentioned I have wondered if Stixy was going to last and I have looked around for a "Plan B" in case it were to disappear. But every time I have looked I have found nothing to really compare. I suppose I have been spoiled. Conventional web log sites like Google Blogger and WordPress seem so constrained by comparison. What a big adjustments to live within one of their "Themes". Yet there may be advantages to one of the more common solutions. I'm looking at options.

I am also aware that it's just a couple bucks a month to get a domain name and some web space of my own. Paying that tiny fee would keep advertising off my page, something I really want. The problem is that as easy as Stixy was I was still often months behind in posting things. I can hardly imagine I would be able to create web pages I like from scratch as quickly as I could with Stixy. But maybe with the right editor this could be a solution. On the other hand working within constraints might in the end be easier/faster so with the right "theme" and the right on line tools ? ? ?

Another thing, Stixy lacked a good mechanism for public comments so perhaps this will become an opportunity to mend that situation.

There were two more great hikes I wanted to highlight.

Here is the Web Photo Album for a hike called The Knife Edge south of the town of Sanxia.

And here is a video of the Knife Edge. It's 2 and a half minutes long.
